“There is no trust more sacred than the one the world holds with children. There is no duty more important than ensuring that their rights are respected, that their welfare is protected, that their lives are free from fear…..and that they can grow up in peace.” Kofi Annan

The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC)

Children are born with the same inherent human rights as adults. Children, however, need special care and protection. The CRC recognizes the particular vulnerability of children and sets out the rights that must be realized for children to reach their full potential. The 54 articles of the CRC can be summarized as follows. All children have a right to:

  • equal treatment
  • healthcare
  • education
  • protection from violence
  • protection in case of war or flight
  • freedom of speech, information and participation
  • rest, leisure and recreation activities
  • special care if they are physically, mentally or socially disadvantaged

Maldives became party to the CRC on 21 August 1990 and ratified the Convention on 11 February 1991.
